Jewish Culture Returns To Poland

What is it about Poland and the Jews that not only keeps them going back there, but also establishing among other things a unique music festival.

It defies all logic to think that a country that was the center of the greatest crime in the 20th century, would 80 years later not only have the audacity to promote such a festival, but welcome back the sons and daughters , the grandchildren of the victims back to the scene of the crime.

If you wish for peace, prepare for war

Known as ANZAC day,the battle is commemorated here in Australia and New Zealand this week. It also coincides with Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut commemorations this week.

All three events in their own way underline the importance and significance that we attribute to the those that gave up their lives in the hope of a better future for their families and nations.

Anzac day for Australians and New Zealanders signifies a coming of age through war and death. Why does such transition necessitate death as a precursor to life?

You want answers? NO! I want the Truth

The initial findings of the Military Police investigation indicate that the soldiers Eisner was commanding at the scene of the incident were not adequately prepared for the incident, that border policemen had been present earlier but left before the bicyclists arrived, and that the activists committed only minor violence against the soldiers

There is no doubt about Eisner’s military record and his dedication. But it takes one incident like this to blur all the good that may have been done previously.

Lest I remind you, it’s 2012, not 1912. Clearly Jewish food and especially wine has matured and now foodies and wine buffs can enjoy what traditionally was over salted food and clearly overtly sugar retarded wine with an opportunity to fine dining amidst the traditional story telling of Exodus

Purim-Back to the future

As Jews prepare to celebrate the festival of Purim there is an ironic symbolism of events culminating perhaps with the speech by PM Netenyahu at AIPAC this week.

Although the PM made only scant reference’s to Purim near the end of his speech, the credo that dominated his presentation was that Israel was ultimately the master of its own destiny.

Finkelstein and the truth about the BDS Movement

Norman Finkelstein – known for his outspoken criticism of Israel and advocacy of Palestinian rights spoke frankly about the BDS and Palestinian Solidarity movements. He described these movements as cultish and dishonest and essentially agreed with our long standing criticisms of these movements – that support for the Boycott, Sanctions and Divestment movement is basically a call for the destruction of the State of Israel. Valentine or Valenstein?

The most popular question around this time of the year is “ Can Jews celebrate Valentine’s day?”

Why does missing out on some chocolates and flowers and lots of schmaltzy heart filled cards create such angst?

The truth is that Jews have been involved with valentines and the day of love for years. I am not talking about the historical connections in some attempt to give some it participatory legitimacy.

Firstly Jewish tradition already has its own let’s get loving celebration. Tu B’Av, but more of that later. Continue reading “Valentine or Valenstein?” »

Haredim crossing the line

The Jews that died in the holocaust were chosen not by the hats they wore nor by the clothes they did or did not wear, nor their adherence or non adherence to any particular religious sentiment.

They died because of their heritage.

This use of the yellow star and obvious posing for the cameras in replication of a well known picture is to spit in the face of those that died and those that survived. I am ashamed for them.

Yiddish Rocks,Swings and Jives

We want the people to leave our performance completely sweating, emotionally uplifted, excited and exhilarated after dancing all night long! If, as well as loving the music, having been exposed to something they have never heard before and it has raised their curiosity as to what the songs were about, then this would be a great sense of accomplishment.

Hope for the Hopeless-A Jewish Soldiers Letter

I don’t speak a word of their language, but the look on their faces said it all and reminded me once again why I am so proud to be a Jew and an Israeli.

The echoing sounds of the Shofar  start to fade as we drift away from the epoch , the vastness of Rosh Hashanah. New media brings new hope from the ashes

the Jewish history that Goeth was determined to extinguish was only to fall silent rather than disappear.

Waiting for Palestine

It is two days before Pesach…and I meet up with Amira.
Amira was born in Israel. Amira calls herself Palestinian…but does not say she was born in ‘Palestine’. She calls it Israel. She does not call it Israel for my benefit.  She does not know what I call it, nor does she care. She says she was born in Israel as a Palestinian and devout Muslim, to a family longing for a sense of home. ‘This home…”, she tells me, “…is a place which does not yet exist”. Liberty is the right to choose, freedom is the result of that choice

When liberal democracies start banning and controlling individuals choices based on some perceived greater moral good then I hear the echo of John F Kennedy who said

The unity of freedom has never relied on uniformity of opinion.

Gene Simmons slams Obama

Perhaps Gene can enlist the KISS army to rally and vote for him into the senate. He might have a shot at being chosen as Secretary of State. He might want to brush up a little on his knowledge of the Entebbe hijacking however. In any case lets give Gene a big tick for saying what many others keep under their make up. Nice one gene

Israel out of Eurovision…Thank goodness!

The state of Jewish media in Australia

It may well be that the official complaint, along with public brawling on Lion’s own Facebook page, unfavourable reports in the Australian Jewish News and other online forums, has jeopardised any future applications for a permanent licence.

Refaeli should be barred from Israel

Israel has many civilians and soldiers who have objected to participating in army service. For most of them it’s a case of a conscientious objection. With this the writer has no objection. However Refaeli’s obvious self-serving sentiment did not go beyond her own selfish career aspirations.

Amy Winehouse-Member of the Tribe

It’s this unrepentant behaviour that signals Winehouse’s place in a very different line of Jewish women—not the “nice” ones who make you chicken soup when you’re sick or assure their sons that they’re the smartest boys in the world and any woman would be lucky to marry them.

Purim story comes a little early

We may want to see the likes of Galliano as relics from another era or as mere eccentrics, but they are expressing a set of attitudes that remain deep in the soil and which have never been fully shaken off

Porn Defeats Hypocrisy

Israel “is a tiny island of democracy in the jungle of the Middle East and Israeli democracy greatly needs our support. It is something that is important to preserve,” Lucas wrote

Lipstikka-Art can find a way

Israel in the last few years has had the moral high ground stolen from underfoot. The Palestinian cause is treated by most of the world and media as was the Vietnam conflict. Rightly or wrongly Israel is now seen as the pariah, the occupier.
